Our Patron and Author of Behind Those Care Home Doors Adeline Dalley who advocates for the provision of outstanding care should be the objective of every provider; the receipt of outstanding care should be the right of every individual who needs it.
Messaged me today with a personal report on the lack of inclusive and functional activities being offered within the care system.
So, let's talk Nursing Home Activities
for £1200 a week or more at Christmas.
I don't call watching carol singers, or
having your nails painted with Christmassy polish activities, especially as
this will be for maybe 5 out of 40 or more patients.
But then there is always the trusted electronic "babysitter", set to a channel of continuous chat shows and made ever popular by the Ricki Lake fan club!
My Service Users have a chocolate calendar,
tell me why when you pay £1200 a week in a home can’t each patient have a £2 calendar?
Staff could take in their family’s gifts
for Service Users to wrap for them, they love this and it is good for hand co-ordination
and for maintaining dexterity, as well as making them feel of use.
Within many homes activities don’t even
happen, despite the well-advertised Residents board advertising a full and
entertaining list of activities available and on offer, so don't bother reading
the sheet of entertainment promised.
What is done for bed ridden patients who
don't leave their room either?
Adeline makes a point, there is not
enough inclusive activities available.
Which is why as part of UK Charities Week which begins on Monday, 5th December 2016, and as an official partner Charity The Edith Ellen Foundation is looking at raising awareness in the lack of activities and offering the solution with a free accessible list of activities for all involved in the Care Industry to download and utilise.
This will conclude with our presence at the
Kings Lynn Market on Saturday, 10th December 2016, where The Edith
Ellen Foundation will be raising public and community awareness and offering a
Silent Auction to raise much needed funding for activities within our local
area.
